In June/July 2022 I was in the process of applying to another job. My boss was the quintessential model of narcissitic ass. To list a few things:
- Insulted my military service
- Made 3 women cry in 1 month after royal ass chewings over report format (these women were also annual company award winners, not your average people)
- Bragged how no one leaves his shit list
- Denied my 1-day PTO request to pay respect to my son on his death anniversary (I had PLENTY of PTO saved up)
- Suddenly said he wanted 5 business days notice for any medical appt whatsoever
- Forced other managers into changing people's bonuses with no reason why (like by several thousands of dollars)
- Due to timezone differences, expected me to be at 7am (local time) meetings and stay until 5pm…yes, 50 hour workweeks. (This was not agreed upon during the interview process and onboarding, I was told 8-5).
Anyway, he threatened to put me on a PIP but the only reason he gave was “not sure you're a good fit.” When I emailed him back to clarify, hell broke loose. He threw every tactic at me to manage me out the door. Gave me insane assignments with short deadlines, etc. Finally I accepted a new position, 2 positions higher and $60K total comp increase. Im thriving here and even got a 6% salary increase from last year despite only being here for the last 5 months of the year.
Fast forward about 16 months after I left that company. I meet my former coworker at a conference whom hated this guy as well. Turns out, he was recently put on a PIP by his supervisor, and his life became hell and he was acting all scatterbrained on team meetings. Through a high-level source in HR that was also one of her friends, and whom she also hated, she found out this dude (who is 2 levels above her) was on a PIP
He couldnt take it, probably knew he wouldnt survive the PIP, and left. Well, he took a job 2 steps down from his previous role. And to top it off, his wife divorced him (she has a coworker thats his friend on facebook, and he posted about it).
Karma went full savage mode on him, and he got what he deserved. For a year this guy made me question if Im a decent leader for my career field, and that self doubt perpetuated into my new role Ive had for 16 months.
Now I can relax knowing he was just a jackass and got away with shit until it finally caught up to him at a nuclear level.
The end.
