My boss is one of those who always covered for the weak links. We have a lot of those. I’m too jaded to really care. But what I don’t like is when I’m expected to pander and enable their behavior.
I have to build systems to present data for their KPIs. I thought it was common sense to expect the dept heads to outline their KPIs so I know what to display in the system but he shot it down. I was genuinely confused how am I supposed to do what he expects me to do without knowing what KPIs to display for each department. He says I was being resistant to him (not asking them for their KPIs). After a few weeks he wouldn’t shut up about KPIs.
Recently, he asked for help in creating case studies. Because I knew these people will not prepare their data, i created a template to serve as guide for their data gathering. But of course they didn’t use it despite repeated reminders. Come meeting day, boss asked them to share their experiences with the clients. Of course it was all muddled and none of it made sense. They didn’t have any supporting data. Or KPIs to support their ‘very very good job’. Just their opinions. And I was expected to note what they were saying, but since it’s just streams of thought, none of it was worth writing down.
When he asked my opinion, I said did anybody prepare any data or even looked at the template. No one replied. Boss proceeds to protect his bros. Says we’re just sharing stories and surely there are gold nuggets of wisdom there. I said ok sure, I’ll follow your lead. Like I said, jaded. Why fight the system. Now I am being asked to discuss my behavior tomorrow.
UPDATE: hahaha he fired me. Hahahahah. We just had a talk two weeks ago where he assured me and my team that our jobs are secure. But he’s the type where he’ll say one thing and do another or no follow through. Now he’s accusing me of manipulating my time tracker which I have zero way of knowing how!
