I work at a small local company doing outside sales. I don't hate the company, although I'll be leaving soon in order to keep up with industry wages and better benefits and whatnot.
Something that happens here really highlights toxic company culture in a way which I strongly dislike.
We're a green company with a mission, purpose and values, and we have a Slack channel called #achievingpurpose where we are supposed to post things that we encounter which show that we're achieving our purpose, right?
The posts always read like, “Look how great we are, we're doing amazing things and changing so much in the world.” We aren't. We're a 50 people for-profit company that uses green washing to appeal to a rich white demographic in a large city.
What gets me even more is that as a sales person, one of my KPI's is consistently posting in this channel every week and it is such a fucking headache to try and come up with some way that I believe that we're actually changing the world positively. I can't do it. So I don't, and it comes up in almost every quarterly meeting with my boss that I don't.
These companies just want you to drink the kool aid. Even if we were changing the world in a significant way, I don't ever see any of the monetary benefit from that. We don't even get annual raises and at 6 years tenure I get 10 days of PTO with no holidays. I will not participate in the circle jerk.
