I started a new role at a medium-sized company last week. During the entire 4-round interview process and the extra meeting we had to sort paperwork, I understood that this role would be fully remote. On my first day, my manager let me know that this has to change.
He told me that I would have to be at the office every day, except when I don’t feel well. I had a company car in my last gig, and now I’m forced to spend personal resource to get a car and maintain it.
My manager also told me that I would be the one breaking the news about RTO to all the people in my organization. I politely addressed my concerns with him and asked for his support for the announcement meeting. Received no support or understanding whatsoever.
Also found out many things aren’t how I was told they would be, mostly in terms of infrastructure. For example, we can only use browser versions of all office apps, as the company doesn’t want to pay for full licenses. Other vital tools are also very neglected.
They don’t encourage company phones, yet the documents state that any personal devices that store company info will be confiscated. I told them this would be the reason why I wouldn’t install anything onto my personal phone. My manager’s reaction was “who cares about these clauses?”, which left me honestly speechless.
Today, I spoke with one of the other companies that I was in process with and they confirmed they are fine to reactivate my offer. Which they did within the hour.
I just had a meeting with my manager, informing him I will be leaving, which left him in shock and he started yelling at me, stating imaginary arguments for me to change my mind. I just left my stuff at the office, looking forward to tell all my contacts about them.
