Left a salaried job and saw the posting for an hourly rate

I recently started, and quickly, left a salaried job for a small company. I was super stoked to apply and get the interview but there were some red flags that went off during the in-person interview, which consisted of them basically bragging about how great their company is and them making sure I’m going to show up and do my job. Like saying something along the lines of “we just want to make sure you’re not going to show up just because you don’t feel like it”. It had the same energy as when you see a job posting and it looks great until you get to the end where it says something like “only apply if you can show up on time!” “Hard workers only!”. You know those jobs are going to be rough specifically because of management. It seemed like they’d had a really bad experience with previous…

It seemed like they’d had a really bad experience with previous employees not showing up, but that’s not my problem. I left that interview thinking “we’ll, I’m not working there”.

Anyways, I got an offer and accepted the job (because I needed it) and 3 weeks in and my son gets sick, we’ll he’d been sick for a week, but his mom used up all of her PTO so I had to stay home with him. I explained the situation and asked if I could work from home, because the majority of my job, IMO, doesn’t require me to be in office. They said “no”, so I used my two annual sick days.

I get back to work and they take me aside at the end of the day and talk to me about taking time off from work and asking if I’m setting a precedent, saying that they were clear about the expectations of the job, etc, etc. I remember clearly them saying “you were doing so great then… this all of a sudden” and I was confused by what they meant, and they said “your absences!”

Look I get it, taking sick days off so soon after joining isn’t the best look. But I had to take care of a sick child, I didn’t have a choice. They knew that’s what I was doing and I felt their reaction to be incredibly inconsiderate and unfair. I wasn’t out on a joyride, I was taking care of a toddler who was shitting all over the house and crying all day.

Anyways, I left shortly after that conversation.

Today I saw a posting for the job online and I was shocked to find out they changed the compensation. 11k less gross than what I was getting paid. I was making $43k and where I’m living that’s not very much. I’m not sure I understand it- I guess they don’t good employees?
