Little story from my past

Hello. I used to work as a security guard. In 2017 i was patrol driving for a security company. The hours were high, the pay was low, the off days were short and most of the time you were pulled back to work because “somebody got sick”. They monitored us, having to wear a body cam that needs to be activated constantly, for “safety reasons” (they fired an employee for smoking in the car and they were able to discover that, thanks to the cam). 2 things happened that were the reason why i didn't wanted to work anymore. I surprisingly had 5 days off. I booked a plane ticket and visited my girlfriend (back in the day we were a long distance relationship couple). I got called in 2 days within my off days, telling me i need to come in. I told them i can't, since I'm not…

  1. I surprisingly had 5 days off. I booked a plane ticket and visited my girlfriend (back in the day we were a long distance relationship couple). I got called in 2 days within my off days, telling me i need to come in. I told them i can't, since I'm not home. When i came back, the boss called me in his office, tearing me down for “not telling them that I'm leaving the country”.

  2. Due to the pressure i fell into a downward spiral. I became depressed. As i came in on christmas, they told me that i need to work all christmas days and also new years eve, because somebody took a sudden vacation (i specifically told them that i want to have my day off on new years eve). I collapsed, crying hysterically. Had to spend 2 nights in the hospital under surveillance. I called in sick for 3 weeks after that. Boss called me and said this:

Boss: “i want you to answer two open questions. First, why didn't you gave us notice that you will be laid off for 3 weeks, and second, what's the matter ? Why are you sick ?”

Me: “i was too tired and exhausted to call, even tho i have a 3 day window to hand in my noticed and second, my health status and my symptoms are not your concern. I'll come back in once I'm healthy again.”

Boss fired me shortly after. I dragged him through court and got a 3 salary months worth of lay off payment.

Was it worth it ? Kinda. My mental health hasn't been the same since that incident, but at least i was able to leave and get some money while doing it.
