Lost out on a job I probably would’ve really liked because they asked for my W-2’s from recent employers

Has anybody else ever had this happen before? Back in June, I interviewed at a manufacturing job. Pay was decent, good benefits, shift I wanted was available, etc. They told me I would have to pass a drug test and physical. No problem! Then the background check.. Now, when I’ve worked for other factories/manufacturing places the background check was just to make sure you didn’t have any felonies. Basically just ran your name and as long as nothing came back, you were hired. This company however, in addition to running my name for felonies wanted me to submit my W-2’s from my recent employers and I was “strongly encouraged to redact most of the information”. When I asked about this I was told …. “Oh it’s just to make sure you worked at these places when you say you did.” This is the first and only time this has happened…

This is the first and only time this has happened to me. Needless to say I ended up turning down the job because I wasn’t comfortable handing over my tax information just to “prove I worked somewhere”.

Has this ever happened to anybody else?
