“Love what you do and you never work a day in your life,” is this brainwashing?

Growing up I (30F) heard this a lot and when it came time to go to college I was reminded of this so I majored in what I “love” which was art/graphic design and I regretted it. In college it was drilled into me by multiple professors that in order to succeed I needed to “live and breathe design” and to literally consume it even when standing in line at the grocery store (look at design on Pinterest, etc). I remember the disgust my professor had when talking about a former colleague who left design to marry and have kids. I now wonder, years later, if this quote I grew up with is said to brainwash people into believing that the devoting your life to working is normal under the guise that it’s because you “love what you do”. Idk just a random thought that I sometimes think about.
