I have very black-and-white thinking. I tend to be quite literal in following instructions. Twice now, I have followed the procedures for reporting a threat and then had the manager ask me if I needed help submitting an additional threat report.
Today, I reviewed the practice directive around threats because I thought I had made a mistake and not asking probing questions during the call. Not only were there no instructions on asking these kinds of probing questions, but the directive indicates that the manager is to submit this second report.
I sent an email today to follow up on the threat report I submitted last week, and I asked for clarification around the correct procedure because what I am being asked to do in practice is different from the practice directive. (Although I didn’t see this in my email, I don’t really care whether I fill out the report or not, I just want the directive to match with what we’re actually doing.)
Rather than thank me for pointing out that there’s a discrepancy, my manager edited the practice directive. In their email, they write, “Please continue to follow the procedure outlined in Practice Directive #5. If you are unclear about a step (or steps) reach out to your manager for guidance.”
So, do I email them back and ask them when the practice directive was changed? Like… do they not know that you can view the edit history of a document 🤣? Changes to the practice directives are supposed to go out to the whole branch so that we can all change the way we do things, and I’m probably the only person that has a printed copy of them all in a binder on my desk.
This is a lack of transparency. This is why I’m about to be “performance managed”: management is intimidated by me. They should be. Fifteen minutes after being told to find a steward, I was over the shock and grief of it and found myself saying, “bring it on.” If it is what it should be, I’ll get the info I need to do better (I’ve been begging for direct feedback).
If they want to make my life miserable, though… if this is about getting rid of me? 🤣 grievances, FOI requests, failure to respond to a reported hazard, disability accommodation requests…
