manager lied to me about a promotion

sorry, but of a long post/rant earlier this year, my workplace recently announced that they would be rolling out a new upper management position. my direct supervisor expressed his interest in the position and so i decided i was going to try to take his spot if he got promoted. for context, i’ve been with this company for 5 years, and on this particular team for 2. i’m anticipating having a major surgery at the end of this year and needed the extra money to help with the expenses. my manager asked me if i would be interested in his spot, i said yes, and so i started essentially shadowing him so that i could learn more about his role and what i needed to prepare for. eventually he started telling other associates, as well as myself, that i was going to be inheriting his position. it was like this…

sorry, but of a long post/rant

earlier this year, my workplace recently announced that they would be rolling out a new upper management position. my direct supervisor expressed his interest in the position and so i decided i was going to try to take his spot if he got promoted.

for context, i’ve been with this company for 5 years, and on this particular team for 2. i’m anticipating having a major surgery at the end of this year and needed the extra money to help with the expenses.

my manager asked me if i would be interested in his spot, i said yes, and so i started essentially shadowing him so that i could learn more about his role and what i needed to prepare for. eventually he started telling other associates, as well as myself, that i was going to be inheriting his position. it was like this for months.

about a month ago, he took a vacation week and put me in charge. he even went as far as to email the other supervisors in the building to let them know that they should touch base with me if they needed help/had any questions regarding our teams tasks.

i thought the week went fine, we got all our projects done on time or early. a couple of the other managers had me helping them with some smaller tasks around the building as well. it was a pretty busy week for me but i felt okay knowing we accomplished a lot.

my manager ended up getting the promotion he wanted, meaning that his position was now open. however, before they opened applications, he pulled everyone from my team aside for a one-on-one conversation about how the week went. for the most part, everyone said i did fine, except that i had a few things to work on leadership wise (which i expected, it was my first week in charge and balancing tasks that we were assigned and tasks from other members of management was tricky at times). but both my manager and his supervisor told me personally that i did a great job, so i was feeling pretty confident about my upcoming interview

i found out from a coworker that an older lady i work with apparently hates me and stated that if i got promoted she would quit her job. she basically threw a tantrum at the thought of me getting promoted and decided to angrily complain to multiple supervisors (most of which have no control over our department). at first i didn’t really care, to each their own i suppose. but after that my manager started completely avoiding me. he stopped letting me assist with the task planning and all training opportunities suddenly came to a halt. he never told me himself that any of this happened so i’ve been pretending not to know about it

they opened the applications a few weeks later and i applied. i felt that my interview went well, however my manager continued to avoid me and would always claim he knew nothing about the status of my application when i asked. weeks passed and nothing happened.

yesterday a coworker came up to me telling me they hired someone and he’ll be starting in two weeks. my manager still hasn’t said anything to me. about any of it.

i’m really frustrated because of the lack of honesty from my supervisor. i’m not upset that i didn’t get the promotion (i’m disappointed but i understand if the other guy is more qualified), i’m more upset that my manager doesn’t have the decency to be honest and upfront with me. he knows that i have been looking forward to this so that i could afford my surgery. if i had known that this was going to be the outcome, i would have left and found a better paying job months ago. but instead, he decided to string me along for months and take advantage of my labor to benefit him while he was out, just to turn a cold shoulder toward me. i really wish he would have been straightforward with me from the start rather than lying to me and others and getting my hopes up.

i guess for now, i’m going to suck it up and just do the bare minimum until i have my surgery and can quit. i’m no longer going “above and beyond” because i’m fucking exhausted and they very obviously don’t respect me enough to even let me know what’s going on. i wouldn’t be so upset if he hadn’t told me TO MY FACE i was going to be promoted. i feel embarrassed.
