I worked at a grocery store for a few months, was close by and often rode my bike there. One night at about 10:30pm I was on my way home when two masked young men also on bikes started chasing me and threatening to steal my bike. Luckily I wasn’t that far from the store and hauled it back into my work and had someone pick me up. After the incident I had talked two three managers on the phone about changing my availability so that I would not work after sunset as the trail I take home would be lit and full of pedestrians. The first two said things like “yes of course your safety is important” the last manager (who I assume has the most power) just said “talk to me at your next shift”. He didn’t make time for me at my next shift and I had to continually ask where he was and when I did find him and explain again what happened and what I was asking he replied “that isn’t something we can do for everyone” and “you didn’t think about this before you applied?” I just looked at him like he was the dumbest man I ever talked too. No, I never considered I would be a victim of an attempted robbery. I was one of only three people who rode a bike to work, I assumed it wouldn’t be too much to ask to feel safe on my way home. Ended up talking to HR and they didn’t really help me and I assume my managers knew about my report cause they started treating me more harshly afterwards, ended up walking out 2 hours into a 8 hr shift because I was just done with them.
TLDR; was almost robbed on my bike ride from work, managers made me fell expendable.
