I work in construction. Mandatory overtime is infinite and eternal. Mandatory overtime is the culture.

They get people in here that are living pay check to pay check. They cannot afford to lose their jobs.
The big bosses push mandatory overtime because they know the folks that live paycheck to paycheck are wage slaves and will not rebel.
I rebel.
I was fired from a previous job because I refused to work consistent overtime. I literally did my straight 40 and took days off.
This upcoming weekend my current corporation wants me to come in on Fridays, Sundays, and now this upcoming Monday (labor day).
I just told my foreman that I am going to enjoy my 4 day weekend and that he is welcome to give me a write up or fire me. And I told him that I am not part of this culture of wage slavery.
