Merely saying ‘thank you’ for good performance is just lip service

Long story short: I was doing quite well in this role. Previous boss gave me a favourable yearly appraisal (Grade B or 'exceeded expectations' and this equated to a decent bonus). New boss came in and barely 2 months later, it was appraisal season again. (Old boss moved to another role in an internal transfer.) New boss had fairly positive words and often said things along the lines of 'thank you, good job' in person and emails. So thought I should be getting another B grade. Performance appraisal revealed: got a C grade ('met expectations'). Rather disappointed and job search mode fully activated. A couple of months later, I left the company for a more senior and of course better paying role. New boss was a nice guy (no doubt he was cordial, respectful and fair etc), but I would rather have a much more tangible/material thank you rather than…
