My boomer parents believe that the only way to get a job/get promoted nowadays is to continuously do unpaid overtime

I'm unemployed and have been unemployed for over a year now. My father is a freelance lawyer, and my mum has been a housewife for 35 years. My older brother (Gen Y) is a QA consultant. Pretty much for the past four years, my parents (and my brother) have been trying to persuade me that the only way to get a job is to continually do 'overtime' – in their heads, it's to stay after you clock out and 'hone your skills' and 'get answers to whatever questions you may have so you could hone your skills.' They're convinced this is the way because my brother did precisely this and got a promotion fairly quickly, from a clerk to that QA consultant position. Nope. I don't care what you say. My foot is out the door as soon as my 8.5 hours are up. If you want to work for 12 hours and get paid only for 8, then it's your choice. Leave me out of it.
