My boss got fired for vaping nicotine off the clock

I just got back from some time off and noticed one of the managers wasn't on the schedule anymore. Asked a few people who didn't really know why but all said she got fired. But today finally someone knew and filled me in. We work in a mall for context – she clocked out for her lunch, took off her name tag, exited the employee doors and went to the food court on the other side of the mall. That's when she proceeded to hit her vape. Another manager happened to be on break and saw her, and then decided to take photos of her doing it and forwarded it to the higher up. She was fired the same day. Honestly I hate when people vape inside any building, I've seen it happen a ton in the mall. But I'm kind of shocked that 1. the other manager felt the…

Honestly I hate when people vape inside any building, I've seen it happen a ton in the mall. But I'm kind of shocked that 1. the other manager felt the need to snitch & 2. the fact that she lost her job over it…

I guess their argument is someone could have seen her at work earlier, then seeing her vape knowing where she's employed could reflect poorly on the company.

I just feel awful knowing she now has no job, no health benefits, nothing – just for hitting her vape. IMO it should have been a discussion, possibly a write up… What do you guys think?

EDIT: Not surprised there's mixed thoughts as I definitely have mixed feelings. Like I said, I do seriously hate indoor vapers – I've confronted 3/4 of the public bus vapers I've encountered (the first guy looked like he was ready to beat the shit out of someone lol so I kept my mouth shut). I think it's common sense to show respect towards others by only doing it outside.

But I still feel bad for her. As far as I know it was really nicotine not a dab pen, I think that because she always has a breeze when we're closing that she hits outside. It always smelled like the nicotine kind, the dab ones smell different, but alas I wasn't there when she was fired so can't fully confirm.

To anyone surprised there's a mall still open, trust me I'm surprised too lol. 8-10 years ago I would've bet money our mall would be closed by now, but somehow it's thriving! They just built a new Dave & Busters, froyo stand and a Lego store.

I still don't fully get why the other manager snitched as there doesn't seem to be a benefit for her, they were at the same level of leadership and there are no promotions to be had. But I'm sure I don't know the full story.
