I already posted this in legal advice. 20F. Ive been working as a server/barista/cashier in a small mom and pop restaurant for less than a week. I make 10 hourly. Today, the owner training me said I make cash tips, but since I make a “living wage”, the owners take my tips made through card.
I am already thinking about looking for another job while i’m working here, but the job outlook in houston SUCKS. I’m also trying to justify staying there bc it’s less than 2 miles from my house, it’s a fairly easy job, and i get free food and unlimited (i think?) free drinks.
Idk if i should be grateful for what i have given the perks and how convenient it is. On the other hand, it is deceiving the customers because they do not know that they are tipping the owners. in addition, when i worked in a boba shop i made 8-10 an hour my whole time there, and i still got both my cash and card tips.
i know im gonna look for another job. but should i say anything to the owner? like “hey i worked here before and it’s supposed to be like that, you are doing something illegal”.
im just thinking out loud at this point. looking for any commentary, advice, or similar stories to help me decide whether to confront them or not.
