My boss wanted two weeks of unpaid work because I’m family

So, I started a new job but it seemed sketchy. I was hired by a family friend because I told them that I needed work and thought this was a good opportunity for me. They said they have their own company and I was open to a position with them in marketing. I was so happy about this because I thought this would be the start of me being in full time employment and also work for someone who seems nice so I could finally move forward and get my life together. I didn’t mention wages or how much I would get paid since I felt that was rude to ask straight away, so I’d ask about a week in. On the day I was meant to work, I get an international call.

Which was fine but I wasn’t understanding why they didn’t use my country’s number. Apart from that, I had no problems and started editing some documents they gave me.

The next day, my boss was five hours late at responding to me.

They just sent me some recordings to go through.

I got fed up and asked them for actual work and the wages I’d get while working here. They told me I’m doing two weeks of free labour. I was like, are you serious, no. I’m not doing that.

They want me to work two weeks for free before paying me (I think it’s because I’m a family friend) and they want me to finally come to the office next week.

I quit, I may be looking for work but I’m not that desperate.
