So long story short I work as a sys admin in a city with high traffic, and last year was the end of the work from home era so I've had to go back to the office 5 days a week. During a meeting with management I asked nicely if I could continue wfh but the boss said something like “But you're a lifesaver for some of us and it is much easier when people can have their problems fixed in person right away!” Even though I literally work at the same speed whether it's at home or at the company. Someone claimed that I would be much more likely to get a raise sooner if I was present in the office, and at the time that seemed reasonable to me.
Now it is almost a year later, and I still haven't gotten a raise or an offer to work from home, so I decided to talk to my boss directly and make a new offer. I told him that I want to work 4 days instead of 5 days. He looked perplexed and said that if there were issues on the 5th day of my usual work schedule, and they were not fixed, it would be fair to blame me if the other guy couldn't do the job. It almost seemed like he was kidding and I was about to laugh but then he cut right to the chase: “Not happening, we really need you to stay with your current schedule”.
I reminded him that I could still, in fact, do a schedule that keeps 5 days but taking half of the workweek from home and half in the office. He asked me if I have issues with people here, because “again with this working at home nonsense” which he doesn't understand because I guess as a nearly 70-year-old he's never seen anything wfh before covid so he thinks it is a scheme to be lazy by the new generation.
I didn't get fired but after that point he said he would be glad to replace me with someone who actually likes working and would never have a problem with 5 or even 6 days. Since I do like where I'm working, I let it end there.
To any employers that lurk in this sub, remember that 3 day weekends are very motivating to workers and will absolutely not make you lose profit!
