I’ve been working for a company for about just under a year, and I’ve been desperate to leave since I started. The lack of communication, borderline sexual harassment and lack of professionalism from my new manager, illegal working hours, being underpaid and humiliated by said manager in front of other staff are just a few things off the top of my head to lay the groundwork for what this company is like.
I have been offered a new job role, and the only person who could give a reference at my current job was a higher manager as my manager had left, due to the issues above. My new manager is awful and I wouldn’t put it past them to lie.
After initially agreeing to “support me in my job search”, I have messaged and emailed the higher manager on three different platforms over the last two weeks and they have blatantly ignored me. Now the new job recruitment team are saying if they can’t get a reference from them, they may withdraw the job offer. I have found another manager who works at a site that I sometimes cover for, and they agreed to do a reference for me, but now the recruitment team aren’t picking up the phone or responding to emails.
I’m panicking and wanted to get this off my chest. I knew if someone was going to screw this up, it would be my current employer.
I’m scared that I’m going to be stuck in this minimum wage hellscape forever.
