My employer is withholding benefits after promising them.

Recently started a new full time position around March. Initially, I was told the position would be an 18-month contract, during those 18 months I would not be subjected to receiving benefits to which I agreed. This is where it gets complicated, I have a medical condition that requires me to buy the necessary and very expensive medication to stop/lessen the effects and or outbreaks that i experience from time to time. This medication is extremely expensive and has cost me thousands of dollars. Initially, i told my employer about my diagnosis and they said and PROMISED that once they find another person to fill a missing position in my team – that I would end up having a permanent position in my company and that I would no longer be under contract; hence I would receive benefits that can help with the financial load of my medication. However, yesterday management pulled me aside and told me that they gave the permanent position to someone else and I would remain under contract.

I am completely lost in terms of what to do in this situation, I was promised for months on end that I would be receiving benefits and last minute management decides to not deliver on their promise.

I need help, and I need clarity to figure out what my next steps are.
