So, I work in the packing area of a branch of Red Sun Farms which is a vegetable producing company up in Canada.
Recently, our old manager and old HR rep left, leaving two different people in their positions. In regards to the manager, we've had some issues with him in that he doesn't really know the proper ins and outs of how things run smoothly, be we suddenly got hit with a big issue brought up by both him and our HR.
Apparently, the way payed time off (PTO) was done, was not the way it was done in the now ten year old handbook. We used to have a lot more leniency in how we could request PTO, but now that leniency is completely gone.
The main issue is that now, if we miss even one day without putting in for PTO ahead of time, we are given a strike and six strikes is the limit. This wouldn't be too big of a deal if it weren't for life just getting in the way such as a flat tire, family emergency, or court summons. We would have to predict when events like these may happen and put in PTO or take a leave of absence, of which may incur a strike if HR deems it acceptable to do so.
Now, many of the locals who work here are single parents, dual working parents, and/or exconvicts on parole. Thus, these people would have to put in time off for the multiple situations that they're in. Accounting for actual vacations as well as anything else, that supply of PTO could run dry very quickly, meaning that the company is going to lose a lot of people very quickly because of this.
The nonlocals aren't really affected by this, they are from Mexico originally and they don't really have as many of the issues that us locals run into while here in the states because they live in dorms nearby, meaning they are within walking distance and their families are FAR away. So, this policy doesn't really negatively affect them as it will with us.
The worst part is that they then told us contradictory information as well as try to throw our supervisors under the bus for not telling us even though they also only learned recently. Overall, it's a huge mess that is going to cause them to lose a lot of good hard workers because they only have business sense rather than any common sense.
I just needed to get that off my chest and this seemed like the best subreddit to do it. I can only hope and pray that something changes to make this situation a little easier or that I can get myself a new job that isn't so anti-worker.
