I work in a clinic in the healthcare field. At the start of my full time employment here, I had a couple of sick days so I requested to use my wellness hours to cover the gaps of the two days in my schedule. Note that I had a doctors note that confirmed my illness and what day I could come back. I noticed that the company used 2 of my floating holidays instead, and I got an email from corporate saying that an error happened in the system. It ticked me off, but I let it slide, I’m hardly ever out anyways. Fast forward to the past couple of weeks. I had another sick day with another doctors note. They didn’t pay me for it at all, no PTO, no wellness hours, nothing. Once again, it ticked me off, but more than last time.
I had requested a day next week off quite a few weeks ago to finish my thesis defense to obtain my masters degree. I come in today and noticed my schedule hadn’t changed, so I went to my managers office to remind her that I will not be here this upcoming monday. She looked at the calendar and said “oh it’s a black out day you can’t take PTO, you’ll have to follow the call out policy if you need the day off.” (Black out days are days in which many people have PTO so you can’t have PTO). What irks me, is that I requested this many weeks in advance, I need this day off to get my degree, and when I do call off, it’s going to count against my permanent record as I’m gonna have to sign a form. The day was not a black out day when I requested the day, so it’s obvious other people got approved first and she didn’t even look at my schedule.
I’m mostly ranting. I’m frustrated with this company and it’s practices. Thankfully I have a job interview tomorrow for a company that seems really into me and already has better policies with time off and in center practices when I asked about them. I’m hoping to get the job and turn in my two weeks notice this Friday. I’m done.
