Just wanted to vent for my mom. Shes been working housekeeping at this hospital for 35 years and all this time they have been giving her the smallest raises, so small that shes been barely kept above new hire wages this entire time.
A month or so ago they told everyone in the department that they were raising the starting wage to 16.00 an hour. The thing is she was only making 15.91. After 35 years, she would be making new hire wages. The higher ups realized themat was kinda lame, so they also said anyone over some numbers of years working there would be raised either 50 cents or a dollar (I forget exactly).
They began paying the new amount and added backpay for several months a couple of weeks ago.
Today they told everyone that some manager running multiple hospitals had punched some numbers in wrong and it turns out they could only make it 15.50 an hour and that the employees who had been working their for longer would not be getting the raise, or I should say, they were undoing the raise.
I get that this being Michigan, she gets to essentially pound sand or quit, but shit, its so messed up, shes debating working at the gas station next door, even they pay 15! A massive hospital is somehow unable to give employees basically anything.
I was on the board of trustees for a library, and 2 years ago we gave every employee a raise of like 4.50 an hour and like 5 months backpay, our budget went down like 35k. It was only like 12 employees but still. How they can charge 1 hour in some of their rooms as much as she makes in a month but cant pay he for shot blows my mind.
I just wanted to vent because like I said, pounding sand is about all I or she can do.
