After nearly 5 years at my company, being the only one doing technical work in the department and with an increasingly heavy workload, I asked for a raise. Not the usual 5% end of year one (which doesn't keep up with inflation, mind you) but a reconsideration of my skills and tasks.
I was met with anger, laughed at, and ultimately denied my request, but strung along with a promise of speaking to another department lead to help confirm what they've already decided.
I was told they never expected me to stay for more than 5 years anyway, and there is no room for upward career growth (even though I know higher levels I fit the description for exists in the company.)
Typical modern business practice. I shouldn't be surprised. But it hurts when it happens to you. Quiet quitting while taking my time job hunting.
