Why do companies let shitty supervisors drive off their workers?
My sister is an RN who recently left travel nursing for a more predictable routine and less time away from home. She went to work for a local hospice. The job was fine, but her boss was shit. He was always lying to the nurses, screwing up the schedule, and other forms of incompetence.
When my sister put her two weeks in, he tried to lie and tell her it was “company policy” to put in a one-month notice. She called HR, and they told her that was bullshit. When my sister called him out on his bullshit, he got verbally aggressive and wanted to know who she talked to at HR. She just told him, “Oh, you know. That lady at HR”.
Then, the next level boss calls and begs my sister to stay. She offers my sister better pay or benefits. They are hemorrhaging nursing staff and this is going to make things worse. My sister’s one request was, “Get rid of him or make it so I never have to work for him”. They wouldn’t do it.
My sister is an RN. She doesn’t need them. They need her, and there are 50 companies w/in an hour’s drive that would take her tomorrow. One did. Better pay, better benefits, but worse schedule.
The thing is, this guy is so much more replaceable than any of those nurses. Since she put in her notice she has learned that at least three other nurses have complained. She’s at least the second or third to leave specifically because of him.
Why do companies tolerate bad managers? Especially those in the services who rely on quality and abundant staff?
