Antiwork

My workplace has a history of letting people go AFTER they worked their entire shift that day. Is this normal?

I was always under the impression that if a company/job doesn’t need you anymore, they let you go as soon as you come in that day. I was let go twice from previous jobs, my shift started at 10am and at 10:15, I was asked to come into the boardroom or office. Given this is a retail job, I’m not sure why this would be different. I can’t say we’re understaffed but I will say we are almost always overwhelmed with work, which is why I find this a scummy move.
