Hi everyone. So sorry but I’m just not sure where else I can turn to ask for advice.
My employer just dropped papers on me and my husband both, saying that we are being terminated. For dates at the beginning of April. We both took a week off (using our PAID sick days) and they’re telling us now that we are required to get doctors notes for these dates. They told us before that it was fine.
We took off because our employer switched health insurances. My husband was unable to get his ADHD medication, and I was unable to get my insulin for that week. He had to switch his medication, which made him sick. I finally got mine again, and it made me incredibly sick when I took it again.
Now, they’re telling me they need doctors notes. I never went to the doctor. We were struggling to get our medication due to THEIR switching health insurance.
What is bothering me is this – how can we be terminated for using paid sick time that was earned from the previous year? They used to tell us that they need a doctors note for every day after the first 3 days taken. Now they’re requiring one for every single day.
Is there anything we can do? We are in North Carolina, if that helps. We both are struggling to find other jobs nearby, or I wouldn’t care so much. But this feels incredibly wrong. Is this legal for them to do?
Thanks in advance everyone.
