TLDR: Getting called into a meeting about “performance of my job duties” which i think is because of the amount of sick calls i take due to my mental health. I have been Diagnosed with anxiety/depression and have been getting treatment since 2018. Worried if i will be getting fired or if i can even be fired.
I work at the city of Ottawa in the waste division CUPE 503.
This is a long story but i started back in January of 2023. When i started i never declared my mental health because i do think you need to but i feel like it might have really help me. Things went fine for the first two months until i had to work with one man who blow up on me and almost took my foot off on the back of one of the trucks. Since then i would call in sick maybe once every three weeks. Then at the beginning of may i got into a car accident in my personal vehicle. That has ended up being a whole legal battle with the insurance company which added on to my stress. Than not even two or three later at the end of may i hit a parked car with a city vehicle. Which the city talked to me about and said that i wont be fired for that and that i'll just need more training which ive been reserving since mid june. I also found out the same week as the accident at work that my landlord is selling my apartment.
So all the this added to my already messy mental health so i starting around June i started calling in sick multiple times a week. Like on bad weeks it would be three days i'd call in sick. No one told me anything or talked to me about it until I got a hand delivered letter on Thursday that i have a meeting next week and that i should seek the union repatriation for the meeting. I have already talked to the union rep but they only have told me that they will be there during the meeting for me. Not what the meeting is about.
I just want to know if i can be fired if i have be been struggle with mental health for years and called in too much because things got bad in my life? I feel like the meeting is likely a “warning” but i honestly have no idea. I've always thought that if you took too many sick days that they would give you a warning first?? But i've never had a job with a union or anything like that before.
Anyway thanks for everyone who reads this. it'll be a big help,
Thanks
