A private university that I briefly worked at early this year sent me some sort of refund check a few weeks ago with my correct name and address – It was 1,800) and for some reason I didn’t think anything of it and proceeded to cash the check a few weeks later because I had previously received a check for a smaller amount from them before, and didn’t hear anything from them afterwards.
Today I received an email from somebody in their financial department saying that the check was supposed to be sent to a student, but sent to my address….
“we ask you to remit the amount of $1,876 to (organization name). We apologize for any confusion, your immediate response is greatly appreciated.”
My question is if I even have to give them the money back? It was on the 15th that I cashed the check and it was addressed to me personally. I don’t know how to respond!
