I've been consulting for a small hedge fund for the last year, 100% remote. About 6 months ago they offered a couple of us FTE roles saying nothing would change, you'd still be remote. I didn't take it, but another guy did. They just told him yesterday that he has to move to either Chicago or NYC so he can be in the office 3 days/week or he's being terminated. I feel bad for him, but seriously, what did you expect? Company doesn't have room for all these previously remote workers so they just stuff them into huge conference rooms with what look like cafeteria lunch tables…packed in like sardines. No assigned workspaces so if you show up and there isn't any room, you have to go home and that day doesn't count towards your 3 onsite days. Dress code for everyone mirrors the traders, so no more jeans/T-shirts/Polo shirts. You can just imagine hearing all the executives cackling as they walk by the latest iteration of the sweatshop. Times may change but the pettiness of the rich never does.
