Reddit I think I'm just looking for validation and wording advice.
TLDR; trying to decide if I should just quit or offer two weeks
So I started at my current job about 6 months ago, I was brought on as “office administrator” and was told I'd be basically the assistant to the Assistant GM. That hasn't happened.
What has happened is me doing my job, as well as stock maintenance, and sales (trying to keep it vague but basically 2.5 jobs).
About 2 months ago, the GM has a meeting with all of us about how numbers are bad and if we're not careful cuts will be made and all that jazz. That same week while I was cleaning out the stock (something no one else would regular do) the GM came in and told me to get to sales because we need more sales to “justify my salary”. I get 42k which is the low end of the avg for the area. I'm not complaining but when I take on extra role I disagree with the justify comment.
Anyways a few weeks ago, I was out for 2 days due to covid, during which time I also went to the ER for a separate issue. Worked for two days, on the 2nd day I tried telling my boss, “Hey I have this 2nd issue, it's causing me a lot of pain but I'm still here and I'm doing my best” (TLDR) and his response was basically “you need a job to get paid, and have a life, so figuer it out”. Fair enough but whatever.
The next day I ended up back in the ER and they gave me the option of meds or surgery, I picked meds went home for the weekend. My bosses response was “I think we will have to put you to hourly too much time off sorry hope you feel better. Rate will be 20$ / hr” (my hourly rate would've equalled 23 because we only work 30ish hours a week).
Monday rolls around the meds didn't do what they were supposed, I'm not feeling well but think I'm just gonna push through it. Decided to check my temp, it was 100.4 at the ER 102.4. I ended up with sepsis, and had emergency surgery. His response when I told him, and that'd I'd be off the whole week was “ok”.
It all left a sour taste in my gut and I was expecting to be fired when I went back. So I spent the week filling out job apps because even if I wasn't getting fired I was showed no empathy and was in turned handed a pay cut because my body got sick. (All was doctor documented and shared with him too)
When I went back to work we had a sit down where he tried to walk it all back, clear the air, my hourly pay rate was raised to the equivalent of the salary I made and things turned out rather pleasant. I'd be happy staying, if I hadn't gotten a better job offer.
The new jobs pays slightly more and the hours are more of what I'm looking for and I'll get more relevant experience and I don't have to do sales (which I dont enjoy sales as much as it thought I would).
Problem is they want me to start asap, the next week I was scheduled for vacation so I am off both jobs either way. I could offer to do both jobs for the 2nd week (because the hours are different I could do a half day at old job and full day at new job). This is where the conflict comes in because I don't want to burn the bridge but also the bridge is unlikely to be used again… is there an easy way to let a boss down without giving notice… idk man, so strangers of reddit what should I do…
