My spouse’s grandpa just passed away on Tuesday. After looking at my company’s handbook, I only receive bereavement time for “immediate family”, and husband’s grandparents don’t make the cut. (Only spousal children, siblings, or parents are included in that).
The services are on a Thursday morning/afternoon. I have no PTO available to use right now.
My husband and I just got married last weekend and also got covid, so we’ve been home from work this past week.
All my grandparents have passed away years ago, so there’s no way I would use that bereavement time for my own family.
Do I lie to my company and say my own grandfather passed away? Do I tell my manager/boss the truth and hope they give me a day of bereavement to attend the services? Do I just call out that day and not explain anything to them? What would you do?
(If this type of post is not allowed I understand and feel free to delete).
ETA: for context, I work for a HOSPICE company. I work with elderly, dying people everyday.
