My college age son has applied to countless jobs for months to be setup for the summer. He is no ordinary student. He is – 4.0, dean’s list, full-ride, computer science and Japanese studies major, who is studying abroad in Japan for a year, come August. He has managed to be offered 5 jobs. One told him he was hired, then told him they already filled the position in the intervening week. One told him he would be working days Monday-Friday, then changed to nights on weekends. One hired him and then went radio silent. One hired him, didn’t train him, went from valet parking to bell hop, then from 5 days down to no days this week. He managed to get a technology job at a Dave & Busters, who I mention by name because he has raved about how well he has been treated. Unfortunately they only need him on the weekends, but have scheduled him exactly as promised.
All I hear is how no one wants to work, and how lazy young people are, they expect too much and are difficult. He is the opposite, yet he has these experiences over and over again. He told me today how depressing it is, and I agree. These places seem to only collect data from your résumé and sell it. It is disgraceful and disappointing to me to see him work so hard just to earn a reasonable wage for the summer. I hate what finding a job has become. It is a world of haves and have nots. There are multi-million dollar houses all over this area, but no work. One thing there’s plenty of is inflated prices.
