No we won’t promote you, would you train the new hire?

This happen back in the nineties. I worked at a metal fabrication shop. They decided to put on a second shift. They asked me to be the second shift supervisor. I said I would do that. Got the shift premium plus a nice raise for being supervisor. Went like that for about six months. The higher ups were very happy with the success of the second shift. I had even gotten a small raise in that time. Life was good. Higher ups decided they wanted to increase the size and scope of the second shift. I hand been running eight people. They wanted to at least double it. So they wanted to place a foreman over the shift. Sounds good to me. I go in a little early the next day to talk to my boss to tell him I wanted the job.

I thought I was a shoe in, since I was already doing the job anyway. He said he would pass on the info. I went out to the floor. Pretty soon my boss came out and got me, took me into his office. He said they would not promote me. I said but I'm already doing the job. But they would like for you to train the new guy. I was dumbfounded. I just walked out of his office.

The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. After ten to fifteen minutes, I went back into his office. I told him that since I was not qualified to do the job, how could I be qualified to teach the job? I said I quit as the night shift supervisor, effective immediately. Put me back on days, starting right now. He said that I would lose the shift premium and the raise I had gotten for being the supervisor. I told him I didn't care. I said I'm going home now, I will see you in the morning. And I walked out.

I was moved back to day shift. I lost the shift premium, but that was all. They eventually hired someone as night shift foreman. About six months later I moved on.
