Wife and I are travel nurses. Had to cancel our contract as she was unexpectedly hospitalized and we were 2k miles from home. She applied for unemployment 3/23, kept submitting stuff but was not being approved. Fast forward to 6/23, she’s hospitalized for a month again after still not working since she applied due to ongoing medical treatment and has a physician note that was received by the PA unemployment people. We receive notice she does not qualify for financial benefits so we just give up and make it work on just my part time paycheck.
Fast forward to last week. We receive notice that her employer is appealing her unemployment benefits. We are very confused because last we heard she was denied. We look at the exhibits in the packet and notice that at some point, they fucked up and changed her employer to a company in our state with the same name as her employer in a completely different state (we checked, her application has the correct employer). This tiny company is appealing because they have never heard of my wife, and we agree because we never heard of them either. My guess is when they went to assign benefits they typed the company name into a box and picked the first result which is the company in PA rather than her actual employer in a different state and never checked the address. We log into the portal and find tons of messages we never received. One of these is from 15 min after she was notified she did not qualify; this message was the same form except it states she DOES qualify for a $15.xxx benefit for 26 weeks. This week would be week 25 of these benefits we didn’t know she was awarded.
We are going to contact the appeals referee today ahead of the hearing this week but what are the chances of us receiving this 15k worth of benefits we had no idea she was awarded? Her health has improved and she starts a new job next week after not working since march so this money would be helpful.
TL;DR: can you receive awarded unemployment benefits 25 weeks late that you never knew were awarded to you?
