Just wanted to share a random story about how I got let go from a job 10 years ago

I worked at a Smiths grocery store in Las Vegas in 2013. I just clocked into work, and my mother called me. My mom wouldn’t have called me knowing I was at work unless it was an emergency. I went outside and answered because I figured it was one. I was outside for no more than 10 minutes talking to my mom. She told me my dad was having some heart problems, potentially could have been a heart attack so they went to the hospital. Got called into the office the following day and they suspended me for “wasting company time”. I explained and maintained the phone call and why I went outside really quickly. I was still suspended and fired a few days later. Here’s the best part: I tried to file for unemployment afterwards. And those bastards were so hellbent on making sure my life would suck, they…

These damn recruiters

I’m sure this is a common experience.. hate this shit. There’s a small company I’m considering as I know a few employees who enjoy their roles. I sent my resume to a recruiting contact yesterday, who responded positively within a few hours, which of course I generally prefer. I got an email saying he’d love to meet in person if possible, even that he could fly to me. Ok, I’m totally fine with that, let’s do it. I responded last night. Got another email at 4:30 this morning offering times today and tomorrow that he could meet me—which I can’t because yknow… I already have a job with plenty of responsibility as my resume makes clear. Idk if dude has a private jet or how he was gonna get here so quickly, but I took a couple hours to decide how to respond. It’s now shortly before 11AM and he…

What are the laws regarding this. She had to call out because her child decided to play arts and crafts with their own feces. The mother works for a place that sounds like miberty lutual as claims rep. Working remotely. Is there any US labor laws that would help her case. They company told her that she needs to keep her loyalties with the company and not her kids…

Manager taking away my approved PTO

For context, I requested PTO for 3 days about 2 months ago in advance. I submitted my two weeks' notice last Friday. My PTO falls between the time I submitted my two weeks notice and my last date and my manager is saying that the days that I've requested off are no longer valid. I'm trying to find my contract and I'm going through my offer letter to see if that was anywhere and I can't seem to find anything about this policy in there.

My IT position occasionally compromises my morals

Hi all, The GM asked me this morning if I can “tactfully” ask my coworker if his laptop is here, or at his home. If it is at home, I am to ask him to bring it in so I can “run an update or something.” The laptop must be on premise by tomorrow morning. This employee has been butting heads with the interim Controller. It's clear he will be let go. It hurts my integrity to ask to update his laptop, as if he's going to get it back. I don't know what I'd say if he asks when he's getting it back. He's a good guy, he's always at work and on time. He's got a good attitude too, as long as you have a good attitude with him. I want to tell him what's happening, but it could be used against me during his severance meeting if…

Company wants ME to tell them the job description

So, I've been looking for full-time sales roles for months now, rounds of interviews, no-responses, I've experienced it all. This one was a first for me though… I attend an interview for a ''retail assistant'', it's a step down from what I was looking for but I was getting desperate. I attend an interview after they see how much experience I have and the person interviewing asks me how much I expect to earn. I deflect in a professional manner, and put it back on her, to tell me what they can offer……….she doesn't know, she's the marketing person. Ok, so nothing comes of the first interview but she offers me a second one with the person in charge, who can give me more information. The second interview is in 2 days and I've received and email asking me to prepare a ''short presentation about what the working week at…

I work at a very small retail store and 70% of time I have absolutely nothing to do, but boss is pissed off when I use my laptop to browse the web.

Title basically. I work in a small electronics store and usually we have one customer in maybe half an hour, and on rainy days, early in the morning or late in the evening nobody would come in for hours. I do clean my shop once per week and make sure the shelves are stacked and all, but most of my time I just sit there and do nothing. So I brought it my laptop to mostly just browse the web. I put it away immediately when a custom comes in. But my boss complains that it looks like I'm not doing my job (I do!) and it looks unprofessional. Thing is, there is literally no one else in the store, but me. Why is it such a big deal? Any advice on how to handle this?
