“Back in the 1950s, entry-level young males in the US were able to achieve incomes equal to their fathers’ current income. This was because of that age group’s reduced relative size as a result of the low birth rates in the 1930s. But by 1985 – about the time the peak of the baby boom had entered the labor force – that relative income had fallen to 0.3; in other words, entry-level men were earning less than one-third of what their fathers made. In developing countries, these relative cohort size effects – the reduction in young males’ relative income and increase in their unemployment rate – are multiplied by the impact of increasing modern development, especially the rising level of women’s education. In addition, the large influx of baby boomers into the labor market in the US forced many older workers, who would otherwise be working in “bridge jobs” prior…
My office got an email from the president that for the summer we can “flex our hours to leave as early as 3pm.” I have lots of friends that get to leave early on fridays during the summer so last friday I left at 3. When I get back in the office the next week my boss tells me that we can only leave at 3 if we get there at 7am. How is that a perk???
Just got canned
Caught me by surprise. I thought things were going well with this job, but I had a conversation with both owners of this company. They said they laid out their expectations in the beginning, and that I wasn’t a good fit for the role. To be fair, I was stingy with my time as I feel I should be. I feel that I worked hard every day, gave them eight hours of my life each day and it wasn’t enough. What bothered me is that if my co workers had an issue with my performance, as well as my supervisor, why didn’t they bring it up sooner? Part of it is my fault for not asking for feedback on a regular basis, but also this company works their employees into the dirt and I don’t feel that kind of time requirement they ask for is worth it. So my job…
People I work with thinks I'm lazy because I'm always refusing to take shit. I'm, let's say, a state nurse (not the real job but close enough). I switched hospitals recently. The boss put me in an administrative position. The nurse before me hated it, the one before this one hated it, I hate it, and no other nurses of the hospital ever asked for it. We shouldn't even be appointed in that position, but the hospital's chief wants nurses, so they give him what he wants. Since day one I told them this was not my job and I was not happy to do it. They labeled me trouble maker for it. They tried to forces illegal extra hours (making us work on the evenings when our position does not require it). I said no. They said this was not “nurse's behavior”. Well, I don't need to act like…
More workload, same pay, blah blah blah
My employer didn't schedule me for an entire whole ass week, and only put me on one shift this week. I'm leaving for a surgery next week so this could be why, I'm thinking, plus new employees. But still. This leaves me with a shitty cheque while I'm coming back from surgery. The second thing, after that entire week of being off (uncalled for?) I realized just how much I hate the job, the customers, and not to mention the workload has increased tremendously. We have to upsell to the max. There's a new thing to upsell every damn day. There's 8 books to find the time during busy shifts to sign off on now. Also, a new, labour intensive menu item that isn't worth the money that they're peddling out to customers. None of those items are. I'm just tired of being treated this way. Thankful that I'll be…
I’ve been having some health issues and have some diagnostic testing that needs be to be done. Hospital calls yesterday to schedule- I look at my office calendar and pic a day with ZERO clients coming in. I send the ‘request’ to my manager. This AM she denies it and says ‘reschedule. That’s a day I need All Hands on Deck’. I’m sitting here mostly speechless.
Stop Being Tired!
https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/wizz-air-fatigue/index.html Perhaps the best part is when a spokesperson clarified that this wasn't directed strictly at pilots. So I guess it is ok if your flight attendant, gate agent, ground crew, etc. is fatigued?
When getting a job look out for union bashing. Record it if you can and send it to the labor board. Its becoming a big illegal operation among companies like kroger and home depot. They'll lie and say “you cant share your wages!” Or “youl be fired if you unionize!” Both are illegal scare tactics. The even worse thing they've been doing in some places is implementing fake unions where the rep is loyal to corporate and looks the other way when employees are being abused… it happened in the ups warehouse that i used to work at. The union rep was absolutely useless!
I need help leaving my toxic workplace
I don't know how to do it. I'm miserable. I've cried everyday for weeks. I had my dream job, tattooing, but my boss (well I'm self employed so shop owner) is making it impossible to enjoy and I'm so shy and non combative she has no idea. I hoped her behaviour would change but it's getting worse. I'm too scared to speak up, I've never had an argument in my life, I'm pathetic and I need to leave this place but I don't know how. -My boss refuses to let me control my own diary even though she's shit at it, double booking people, no last name or contact details, books me no dinner break. -I'm the one to open up and lock up the studio everyday because she comes and leaves when she wants. She won't give my colleague keys so if they're working late I gotta stay. -She…
