I don't know how to do it. I'm miserable. I've cried everyday for weeks. I had my dream job, tattooing, but my boss (well I'm self employed so shop owner) is making it impossible to enjoy and I'm so shy and non combative she has no idea. I hoped her behaviour would change but it's getting worse. I'm too scared to speak up, I've never had an argument in my life, I'm pathetic and I need to leave this place but I don't know how. -My boss refuses to let me control my own diary even though she's shit at it, double booking people, no last name or contact details, books me no dinner break. -I'm the one to open up and lock up the studio everyday because she comes and leaves when she wants. She won't give my colleague keys so if they're working late I gotta stay. -She…
Honestly, I love my job so much that it's crazy. I work with toddlers with special needs and since I care so much about the kids on my caseload that I often find myself doing work off the clock- organizing observation sheets, writing up notes for parents, coming up with curriculum adjustments, etc… When you factor in my commute (20-60 mins either way depending on the busses), I'm usually gone from home 9-10 hours a day M-F, then I pull another 30-60 mins of work related activities when I'm at home, and another 1-2hours of school work. Oh yeah, and there's some very unnecessarily complicated OSHA and NLRA violations that me and my head teacher/union steward have been dealing with, including my coworker having to file workman's comp bc she permanently fucked up her back working w a kid w mobility issues and all of her physical concerns were ignored…
Job based Reality TV in the US
Recently I've been watching these shows like Kitchen Nightmares or Bar Rescue from the US and they got me thinking about worker exploitation. I'm not sure how much say, if any, workers have on appearing in these shows. I admit that I'm also ignorant of the laws protecting them, but these programs feel very distasteful. Certainly, it can be entertaining and often the owners are painted in a bad light but many other times workers are publicly shamed on TV or even fired. It seems to me that the blame should be directed at the management and owners directly for poor worker control or low morale. Shaming the worker seems misguided.
And I couldn’t be more proud of her. You rock on Christina. Her breaking point was when our ED decided to move the whole team she had be I charge of for years 30 miles away, for no reason. It was one of many arbitrary decisions our deaf ED makes, and the worst part is we are a non-profit. Our org has now lost 15 years of dedicated I institutional knowledge because our blowhard of a director can’t pull his head out of his ass. This is now the 4th executive team member to leave in 3 months, and he sits around and wonders why people are leaving. His management style is outdated and he sees no reason to change even with insurmountable evidence to the contrary. Thanks for the inspiration Christina!
Teacher Getting Robbed
I’m a teacher in a densely crowded area of my city. Currently, my school charges me 500 bucks a year to park there. Sucks but whatever. We got an email last night that the city is letting condos get developed over a lot we use for parking. Now, we will be getting charged 1500 dollars a year to park at a lot 3 train stops away from the actual school. So now my commute is going from 25 minutes to close to an hour. I feel like I’m actually getting robbed here
Did the math for my payout vs debt+expense while filling out renewal paperwork work and , even if my salary doubled, I'd still make more money for my family monthly if I were dead. Guess I'm going to find a second job anyway cause my wife said insurance fraud isn't worth losing me.
