I work in a chain privately owned liquor store. Like all stores we have a “rewards” program for customers. If they have a store card they get the sale prices on basically a good chunk of their booze. If they don't have a store card, us associates have to ask if they want to sign up for the card. Which involves getting their full name, EMAIL, phone number and zip code. Sounds easy enough, right? But no, no its not. The store I work in is in a heavily Eastern European demographic and I would say about 85% don't speak English. Name, phone number and zip code are easy enough to get. Just ask to see their ID. But asking for an email is a lot harder. But the higher ups want us to get customer emails. And have bribed the associates that if we each get at least 100…
Summer of antiwork
Just in the last week alone, there have been the following stories (U.S.): – the end of Roe v. Wade and the potential for a nationwide abortion ban on top of states banning contraceptives – the United States is preparing for a summer of blackouts nationwide – an impending recession (and whatever the hell is going on with this crypto / NFT shite) – 1 million official covid deaths and a prediction that we will be seeing 100MM+ infections this fall / winter – a UN report that we have a 50/50 shot of hitting the 1.5 degree temperature increase within five years that could lead to rapidly deteriorating conditions worldwide All of this on top of the ongoing housing crisis, the student loan crisis that will soon be a problem once again, supply chain issues and possible food shortages, and the general disgust with which the elites view all…
low paid jobs are absurd!
I (normally) work as an IT guy, and typically earn a low six figure income. Nine months ago I finished working because the company I worked for merged, and I was a casualty of that. Which was fine, I was happy to leave, and take some time off. I lived on savings, spent time with friends, got married, things like that. The bitcoin price crash shortened my reserve money a little, so I've been looking for a new job for the last month or so. The industry and sector I work in is very matured in how it approaches job hunting. Applying for roles is usually two mouse clicks, then a phone call, then an interview. In my couple of decades of working at around 10 different companies, I've never had a reference followed up, never had to give any proof of anything. Currently cash is getting a bit tight,…
A kitchen story
Be me, fry guy. New kitchen, a seafood shack. Drip fry oil on my hand. It blisters immediately. I'm upset cuz we're backed up but I politely ask for a bandaid. We're out of bandaids We're out of bandaids? What? One first aid box almost completely devoid of any supplies. I tell them it's completely unprofessional and bordering criminal to have no medical supplies in a kitchen. I can't make food if pus might come out of my hand that's disgusting. So I just stand in the kitchen and let tickets pile while front of house goes to dollar general. Med supplies show up fix myself and plow through orders like there's a fire under my ass. It won't get fixed unless you make it their problem.
Part time workers deserve benefits
I live in Canada so I’m unsure if my experience is relative to my location. But I’m interested if any of you have a similar experience! I’ve been a part time worker in social services for 2 years. However, due to staffing issues I frequently work full time and overtime hours. Despite working more than a full time employee would, I don’t reap any benefits of a full timer. No vacation, no sick days, no dental or medical coverage. Furthermore, I have been employed by many companies who do this intentionally. Hiring solely young, part time employees in order to acquire the fruits of their labour without giving any sort of benefits in return. To summarize: part time workers should be getting benefits. Especially if employers rely on part time workers to relieve them of their staffing shortages. Wouldn’t it be common courtesy to support ALL of your workers with…
Boss is stealing my time and my money.
I work in a small mom and pop restaurant. They're good people, really friendly, but how they deal with breaks is annoying. I'll work a solid 8-12 hour day, not getting a lunch break, and rather than even just getting it tacked on the end of my shift to hit overtime, they put the break in the middle of my shift. This has lead to me losing 30-50 dollars a week and I am starting to get real pissed. Hell, I'll help the front of house and not even get tipped out by the greedy-ass entitled waitress. They're not in the best financial situation, I get it. But that's no excuse. I'm this close to just leaving, and thinking about suing for my stolen wages. I could count the number of breaks I've had in the past 5 months on one hand, so it'd be a decent chunk. If you're…
That poor guy had to drive to my place with his own fuel, bring his tools and ended up not being able to do what he needed to do because the ISP wrote down the wrong address and, therefore, he did not have access to the right things. Despite calling the ISP for assistance, nothing could be done apparently except cancelling the whole thing and he told me he ends up not getting paid because “the problem was not fixed”.
Me leaving this company has been a long time coming. I work in residential home building. Six months ago my company sent me to an area of town about 45 minutes away from the office. I dont get a lot of communication from anyone at the office. They kind of just leave me here and expect me to get the job done. I have no clue what’s going on with the company. However, I went back to college and finished my degree so that I could get promoted. I just finished in December. My company was hiring Project Managers in January so I applied and reached out. They knew of my intentions of finishing school in order to get the promotion. They ended up blowing me off and telling me that they weren’t ready to promote me. Two months later, they hire a guy for the same position as me,…
Does it ever get better??
I'm lower middle class, maybe, and it seems our society is hell bent on keeping us in a cycle of misery. Expenses add up, and the money my SO and I make is just never enough. First my car broke, I had to get a 'new' one. It needs a few more parts I cannot afford, and it has to be registered. It's been on the driveway sitting for some time and now code enforcement is going to fine me as well. Our central AC broke, and with 99° weather we just couldn't go without it. So there's thousands of dollars we had to borrow. Our dryer broke so we've been washing clothes and hanging them in front of fans, and draped across chairs to dry them. I can't remember the last time we took a full trip to the grocery store, and most days we just don't eat. Now…
Has this happened to you?
I got myself interview ready this morning, dressed very nicely and wore my best watch and clothes. I arrive 10 minutes early (after my commuted to said business) to make a good impression just to be told my $2x/Hr position has been filled and offered a $9/Hr job instead. I immediately said “Shouldn't I have got a courtesy call about that?” The district manager said “It's out of my control”. So it was a complete waste of gas, time and energy. Nonetheless I walked out immediately and I don't know how businesses can keep getting away with these bait and switches. Side note- This wasn't a job that was advertised “up to” $2x/hr, it had a set salary range with breakdown of how much it would be an hour ,It was a supervisory position.
