I worked for a CPA and a man previously earning $200,000/year as a business owner came to me as a completely broken man. First, it started with his refusal to get health insurance because “freedom.” He developed severe stomach pains and didn't want to go to the hospital because that's expensive. He ended up riding there in an ambulance anyway and spending a month in the ICU in an induced coma. And the hospital bill wasn't even his biggest problem. Is there a point to the anti-work movement? A end goal? I ask because I have always said as robots take over my jobs, it leaves less jobs for humans. Thus more people with no income. Which is why I would be for some universal monthly income. I kind of like the idea of how things work in Star Trek, granted I don't know if we would ever get to such a place in the world. So here's a little story. I started this job last year, it was an apprenticeship which in the UK means I legally get paid around half of the minimum wage in return for free training/eventual qualification. Because my income was so low, I was entitled to state benefits to help me get by, but I needed to include details from my contract in the application. The problem: my employer didn't even give me a contract when I started working there. I literally didn't know the exact wage, job duties, or amount of hours I was required to work lol. I kept asking and asking, and the boss would just say 'yeah I've typed it up but I need to print it out', 'I've sent it to [Other Boss] to print' etc etc. It took over a month for them to finally give it to me. One evangelical beliefs is the sanctity of life. This is the idea that every human life is inherently valuable. It expresses itself in a pro-life and anti-contraceptive attitude. Another is the Puritan work ethic. This is the idea that a person's value is directly tied to the amount of hard work they engage in. It expresses itself in an anti-welfare attitude. These two beliefs, however, are contradictory. If every human life is inherently valuable, then the amount of hard work they engage in is irrelevant and everyone's basic needs should be ensured. Going to be putting in my 2 weeks soon because I’m tired of being the laughing stock of my job simply for not being “the best” honestly it’s the managers job to help when someone asks for assistance not laugh and them and call them incompetent. But that’s neither here nor there. Due to the treatment I and many others are receiving I’ll be done before working Saturday the 28th Memorial Day weekend. Because I was scheduled to work it EVERYONE is out of town I even asked subtly “haha hey if I can’t be here for any reason who can make it?” Everyone said they’ll be out of town. I work weekend nights at a hospital, sitting in a back office waiting for a phone to ring.
