Only tragedy allows me to retire
My husband of 22 years died suddenly in December at age 57. I (55M, 56 this year) can now retire at 60 rather than closer to 68 or 70 because my husband died and I inherited his retirement savings. And I still will need a part-time job until I’m 65 to pay for healthcare until Medicare kicks in. It shouldn’t be this way. We both worked hard and saved what we could but it took one of us dying to be able to retire at a decent age. And now with an out-of-control Supreme Court gay marriage could be overturned and I could lose any Social security benefits of being a widow. Welcome to America 2022. Boomers screwed Gen X first
I went to the grocery store yesterday and found that they've added EVEN MORE self-checkout lanes. In fact, I didn't see one cashier. So, why is it that I'm doing work that someone used to be paid to do, and yet I'm still paying the same price (more, actually) for my groceries? What's next? Eliminate aisles and make it a free-for-all warehouse? “Pick your own items out of the boxes. A fun activity for the whole family!” In a sane and just world, automation would make everyday essentials less expensive, give us some time back in our lives, and generally improve life for people. I hate that not only is a former cashier now out of a job, but now they have to do that job FOR FREE every time they go to the grocery store, AND pay the same amount for their food. This world is diseased.
“Happy Teacher” Appreciation Week
So in my local city in Canada has problems with the “labor-shortage”. Big corp CFOs were having a meeting with the city/province government saying these ridiculous points they mentioned with the government: We need more immigrants to stop wage inflation Before the pandemic 200 people wanted to sign up for our (minimum wage) jobs, now only 40 people and that is “scary”. Low birth rates are going to cause more inflation if we don't bring in more immigrants to populate the city We made 14 million dollars before the pandemic, now we only make 7 million dollars due to many workers quitting and not being able to meet demand. Instead of increasing wage for hardworking citizens. It is apparently cheaper to exploit vulnerable immigrants. I am sickened but happy the COVID happened. It really has exposed the absolute malice of millionaires.
