Job called me in. First day and I found this. The wall of fame had nothing on it. There were many other notes basically shitting on everyone. Left 30 minutes into the shift…no regret

Learning and intellectual work at workplace

So, people think workplace is a la la land which will provide them with some gourmet level learning and intellectual opportunities. As if travelling to different places and getting to know the culture there or reading a fine book such as 'Infinite Jest' or apprenticing in a restaurant will not lead to learning or using a brain. Such is the hold of the “la la land” notion that people really believe that workplace are a boon for them and without it we would be spiralling down a deep dark world. And to depict the above idiotic notion for what it is today – an OCD – I have made the following sketch (via ppt and googling skills). THE WORKPLACE OCD

Some thoughts …

I was having a break and an idea was wondering in my mind … about the capitalism and the current system in place. I was thinking about the fact that corporations tend to have more power than world governments and are similar to a monarchy. (or dynasty) … you need to be of “royal blood” to take the power into your hands… On the other hand, I was thinking about the fact that you need to trade 8h of your day every day just to live… to exist. (Is it not similar to slavery?? … you work technically for free, and get food and shelter so you can continue to be a slave?? … just asking). Taking the above ideas together, and the statistic that 54% of people are employed in big corporations … we are technically back 2000 years ago when kings ruled the world, had all the power…

Friendly reminder that there’s nothing in it for you to be loyal to your employer

I've been working for this company for almost six years now, started out in a European country where I grew up. About 1.5 years into my employment I had gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about a specific product this company delivers in terms of design, planning, testing and most importantly actually delivering the product to the end customer. At the same time the company saw how the North American market was going to explode when it came to these kind of products and offered me the opportunity to relocate to the US as bids were starting to pop up and contracts were won by the company I work for. I jumped on the opportunity without hesitation – “Who wouldn't want to live and work in a larger city in the US???” A few years in I gained even more experience and got more responsibilities. I also started to get…

My assistant is getting paid more than me!

I'm a lecturer (F42) and I have my own module that I developed. But I now have 2 lecturers working with me as Assistant Module Leads who don't have the same level of responsibility. However, I found out he is getting £6.5k more than me! Really pissed me off that I'm earning so much less than him and working so many more hours

Background check woes

I was offered a position at a new job (entry level) and every thing was looking good. They just sent over my contract though and it includes a background check clause. Now, I left my last job on not so great terms and I’m very worried they could flame me on this background check. Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have no clue what these third party check services ask former employers/what former employers are allowed to disclose. Every one says they can only check employment dates and job title, but the internet says that’s not actually true. Any advice?
