You could examine any single developed countries economy for similar examples but I'll use the U.S. because I'm more well versed. Obviously slavery and child labour were essential to the U.S. economy from 1776 to the early 1900's. But neither has actually disappeared. The economy of the U.S. extends outside of it's boarders via it's corporations and colonies. American chocolate companies rely on cheap chocolate production which is kept cheap because the land owning and managerial class in places like Ghana relies heavily on slavery and child labour. The U.S. put pressure on Haiti to keep wages at pennies in hour because U.S. corporations rely on Haiti for production of things like textiles and clothes. The U.S. has hundreds of thousands of people doing forced labour in prisons and jails aka slavery. You get the picture. A group of people in one place can struggle for liberation but capitalism demands…
When I met my now-wife, my father in law, one of the hardest workers and friendliest people I ever met, was unemployed. He had been in sales for a company whose name we would all recognize. When she was younger, the family got to go on company trips because of his high sales performance, and at one point he was awarded a watch for being the top salesperson in the country. My girl explained that he had been fired for bogus reasons just a couple years shy of earning his pension, along with several other older employees. I later learned through talking to him that he had been the local union rep, often fighting successfully to keep his coworkers employed, so the employer had extra reason to dislike him. They loaded him up with bad accounts and then fired him for underperformance, which was in violation of the terms of…
I just wanted to make a post here because it’s this group that gave me the confidence to call out some bullshit I encountered yesterday. I tend to be a shy person. I’d been looking for a new job, and set up an interview through indeed. It was a phone interview. The time we had scheduled for came and went. After 15 minutes, I officially lost my patience. They had given me no way to contact them, and their phone line went straight to voicemail because the interview was scheduled for after normal office hours. I messaged them through indeed and still heard nothing. Finally, I gave up on them, called them unprofessional in a msg through indeed and reported them too for failing to show up for their interview. If interviewers think workers are so desperate as to waste our time, they can think again. Hopefully they treat the…
Talking to a lovely young lady today at a franchised hair salon today in US. I had remarked that I was actually happy to see they raised their prices, as it has become apparent to me that they are having trouble retaining staff over the last year or so. She told me that they were told by the franchise owner not to expect pay raises, as they had done a pay adjustment several months back. I took a couple of things away from that- 1.Don't assume as I did that the employees are benefiting at all from increased prices , even in the service industry It's not the Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk Billionaires that are Greedy AF. Even those beloved Small Business Owners don't mind exploiting workers.
To think or assume that one would lie about a family member’s death is insane IMO. If an employer says that your missed shift can’t be forgiven without a death certificate because of your attendance to a funeral, then you should rethink even working there.
I just snapped at my coworker
She is competing for no reason. I am on training and she wants to do everything in front of the supervisor and manager. Today I tried to do some training. She pointed her finger in my face telling me to go to lunch and stop working. I said don’t point your finger in my face I am not your servant there is a polite way to ask me if I want to go to lunch not ordering me. She said I am being rude for telling her she is disrespectful and she was being nice. The supervisor took her side. I fuking hate people
