I used to work for a large bank but in a low paid role in a call centre. Occasionally they would have what they called a Focus Day where we were all expected to exceed targets but they’d be incentives like boxes of chocolates or very cheap bottles of wine. Eventually management got tired of offering incentives and would just tell us “it’s a Focus Day.” On one such occasion a manager said “so today we really need you guys to hit 110%” and I put my hand up and said “will we be paid 110% for doing so?” And was abruptly told no. After that meeting I was taken aside and told I had a negative attitude and that it would be noted in my six month appraisal, which determines my bonus.
So I recently applied for a job at my local library, and during the interview they asked me this question….. how would you describe a banana to a blind person?…. I said I would describe the texture to the person, what is the banana may taste like, and maybe what the color feels like. Next thing you know the interview ended and I was being escorted out. Like huh? What the heck kind of question is that to ask in an interview 🤦️ needless to say I did not get the job.
How do you Determine Your Worth?
How do you actually go about making sure you are getting fairly compensated based upon your position, education, skill set, and years of experience? I heard glassdoor isnt necessarily the best guage on what to ask for. So, what are your tips?
Getting screwed out of $7k+ a year
I started a list of the ways I’m being taken advantage of by the small business I work for because I want to bring it up to my boss. I drive minimum 450 miles a month in my own car with no stipend, and turns out my state legally enforces mandatory reimbursement at the federal rate of 58.5 cents/mile. That’s just over $1k in 4 months… or almost $3500 a year. They got around it by paying me as an independent contractor, which is also completely illegal, and screws me out of the $3500 they would pay annually in taxes if I had a regular W2. 🤦️ I was hired under the assumption that I’d be working 40/week, but with how often I actually work it adds up to under $18/hour. I was making 23 before starting here. When I casually mentioned once that my laptop is 8+ years old…
So I worked at a small family owned furniture store and I was originally hired on as part time but due to some unexpected circumstances I ended up full time within the first month of me being their. I was their for over a year working almost completely full time. Well when the pto vacation and sick days came out it showed that I got what I had earned for working 6 days a week. Well I went to use it a few months later and when I did all of it was cut in half. Their reasoning “you are labeled part time”. Fuck you I quit within the next two months cause they accused us for stealing and tried to make me pay it back.
