Workaholism isn't healthy. It's a disease and it is promoted as if it's a virtue. Feeling compelled to work towards someone else's purpose to the point of exhaustion or worse, doesn't sound like a noble trait. It sounds servile and toxic. And to make matters worse, advertisers promote this as a positive attribute for us to strive to attain. We should “want” to hustle, they tell us flippantly, as if we're idiots for not seeing what they can. If we want to attack the workaholic rebrand of “hustle culture” then it needs to be done in earnest. Support groups for workaholics should be created. Like Workaholics Anonymous, to display in real life that there is a problem with being a workaholic. Just talking about it behind closed doors and on websites isn't enough. We're phantoms. Meme Ghosts. The only people who know this subreddit exists are the people browsing Reddit…
I can relate.
I suspect I’m getting blacklisted.
Research without a job
Hi, I don't really know how to start this post. I understand that I am speaking from a somewhat “privileged” position. So I am a German mathematics student and what I am specializing in doesn't really “have” jobs aside from Postdoc/Professorship. I find it hard to continue believing that I will one day be able to acquire a chair at a University as there are only in the low double digit many in Germany, many universities with a math degree don't even have one. Also the road to it would be incredibly long and hard. To work as a postdoc is also nothing to be desired for an extended period of time (aside from being a stepping stone). So I was wondering whether choosing HarzIV instead of working is a viable option. Positively, it would allow me to focus fully on my research without worrying about deadlines and avoid the…
I’m a canvassar for human rights and up until now this is the best job I’ve had. It’s a new office so I moved up really fast with no prior canvassing experience, but I have a lot of knowledge in social justice issues as that’s what my future career is centered around. I was told with the manager position I wouldn’t have to be on the street 5 days a week, yet as soon as I accepted the job, that’s exactly what they started making me do. My understanding was that I would have “admin days”, aka days where I work on info on the organization for our team. All my “managerial duties” that I was doing up until a month ago when I accepted the job have been stripped from me. I was previously working on informational trainings, handouts, and just things that would make our life as canvassars…
So, it’s that time again:
I'm a member of a fairly large local union, and it's that time again: contract negotiations. Wish us luck everybody – voting is in less than a week. For those who want a union job for all the benefits, remember: the fight doesn't end with forming. You have to fight EVERY contract to keep those things you enjoy, because the company sure as heck isn't going to just give it to you. For any interested in what it's like, feel free to ask. I'll try to answer what I can 🙂
Was told my generation isn’t loyal
I was speaking to a training manager the other day since it’s a very quiet period at work and was looking for something to do. Training manager essentially told me “I was warned about you in my MBA. Your generation will only stay with the company until it doesn’t benefit you anymore.” But said it in a way of “why should I give you any more training if you won’t stay around” kind of context. Clearly these people have a severe misconception of what working a job is.
