Boss trying to prevent me obtaining new job; not giving a reference

I work with a small law firm been here for two years and in my time here I have seen them really burn former employees when it comes to recommendations or references when better opportunities come along for them. They refuse to recommend them for future opportunities because they “didn’t like them” despite whatever contributions and good they did while working here. It’s hilarious they burn all these previous employees and never once consider the fact that they are the issue and not the employees. This job was a stepping stone for me to gain experience and I knew I had no intentions of staying longer than 2 years but I still worked hard every day. I have been very transparent with my attorney/boss regarding my plans to return to school. Asked for a recommendation for my school applications and she did it no problem, “anything I can do to…

Should I sue my employer for wage theft?

I posted this in legal advice but didn't get any replies, hopefully I can get some advice here. So I've been working for this company almost two years, and last year I got a job offer to move departments within the company. This job included working the evening shift starting at 1:00 PM, and a one dollar shift differential which I was not made aware of and did not expect due to my inexperience. The offer letter only says $22/hr for the position, there was no mention that the real offer was for $21/hr plus the $1 shift differential. After a few months working there I was bumped up $.50, and verbally told I would get another $.50 when we eventually moved to a new facility and night shift would end, that's when I found out my real rate. So the idea was when the move happens and I move…

Have to come into work tomorrow for taking a sick day yesterday?

I have some kind of stomach bug and was so sick yesterday. Headache, diarrhea, nausea body chills etc. I’m still not feeling very good today but I just got off the phone with my boss and told him I would come into work today. He said he expects me to come in tomorrow to make up for the hours I missed yesterday It just fucking pisses me off. I’ve been at this company for three years and haven’t called in sick maybe twice. Saturdays are the only days I have the spend with my girlfriend as we both work full-time and are struggling right now. The thing is I need the fucking money I can’t lose this job. Is this even legal do I have any rights when it comes to this kind of shit?

I have a Master’s degree & need a 2nd job.

This is a vent post. I live in California & can't afford to live on my full-time salary. I went to school for 8 years & earned my Master's degree, thinking that I'd be able to live a comfortable life. Well, here I am, 4 years post-university barely getting by on my full-time salary. I'm a single mother of 4 kids, & had to move 80 miles away from my job (because who can afford to live in the Bay Area?) so that I could purchase a home in “The Valley”, to give my kids a better life. With gas prices soaring, food prices increasing, & my current salary rate, I'm “scraping pennies” after every paycheck. Being salary, no matter how many hours I work, I get paid the same. There have been days where I work 12-16 hour shifts, but don't get paid overtime. At this point, I'm looking…

Love being told I’m rubbish at my job

I am a manager at a company. I manage a team of people who do not really want to be there. They see it as a stepping stone to their chosen path. So I have managed to get them doing things in an Help desk way (it's a helpdesk) and I make sure they are well looked after. Now they chose not to do things and I'm always asking them to do their jobs. However today another more senior manager has told me I'm rubbish at my job. Even though we are closing 50% more tickets compared to when I started. It just goes to show that even when you get up the ladder you still get shit on from above. I'm getting paid less than market rate. I'm feeling sorry for myself and I might just drink beer this weekend to make myself feel better

Is there any logic behind not training new hires but running short staffed to the determent of your business?

I went on an interview with a company over a year ago. I had all the necessary skills required for the job but they told me they didn't have time to train me on what they considered my shortcomings. During the interview they explained how busy they were and how desperately they needed to get skilled experienced staff. I tried my best to sell them on my willingness to learn and was confident I'd be up to speed within the 90day grace period. They decided to reject me. Whatever I moved on. But I've continued looking at jobs just seeing what's out there and that same job is still posted and I happen to know they never hired someone. They even took the post down for a week and re-upload it to include “EXPERIENCED” persons only need apply. And I just can't get my head around why you wouldn't take…

For the love of God boycott all businesses on national holidays

Every single holiday my workplace is open 24 hrs. We haven't closed a single day since the pandemic started. Every single holiday we get the same customers saying “sorry you have to work today”. They are literally the reason I have to work today. It's such a simple and easy thing to just prepare the day before.

How to unionize in a RTW state?

I am in Idaho, in a state with very poor workers rights laws. I have attempted to organize my workplace a few times, but people are scared that if they do HR will just let them go since this state is right to work and has no protections for workers. How can I help convince people that this is the best move for everyone? The other issue is that unions here have very little power, my father attempted to join one in his industry (construction) and said that in comparison to the one he was apart of in California, this one felt more like an employment agency that gave out jobs but didn't have any benefits or collective bargaining power at all, and he feels this is how most unions here operate.

I quit my job for getting an “official warning”

This happened more then a year ago but I just found this sub out so I wanted to share it anyway. Also this is in the Netherlands so very different laws etc. I worked at domino’s as a pizza deliverer. But they were gonna get rid of the scooters and made us all drive around on electric bicycles. A new competitor opened and I applied and got hired as a scooter driver for them. I wanted to keep both jobs to make more money. then the other job asked if I could work on Saturday but I had to work on Saturday at domino’s so I looked for a replacement for that Saturday. I found one so I texted my supervisor for that day and they were fine with it. Then at saturday while I was working I got a text from my boss. She asked where I was and…
