Use your benefits
Someone on my team who’s given notice, was lamenting that he’d not bothered going to the doctor or dentist even though he’d been paying “all these years.” The context was that he was checking exactly when his healthcare benefits would be cut off because he had a dentist appointment the next week. He’s a young guy, healthy, just isn’t thinking about this stuff. Anyway I know lots of redditors on here are making plans to quit their jobs; maybe half the posts here are “I quit!” If you’re planning to get out but you have benefits, make sure you’re up to date on your doctor, optometrist, and dentist visits. You’ve put the money in already, and even if you have a better position lined up there’s usually a 60-day waiting period for benefits to kick in.
She died from heart disease which I believe her stressful work environment contributed to. She worked for them for 3 decades and in that time she was subjected to some horrendous bullying and was constantly under intense amounts of stress. It was intensifying around the time of her death, during the peak of COVID, when it was looking like she may lose her job due to the pandemic. They've asked us to say something at this event and I really want to bring up the fact that they need to do some serious reflection on the effects of toxic work environments on employee health, but not sure if it will go down well or will be in bad taste. What do you think?
You know what I did? I kept bumping the hourly rate up until I got the quality of applicants I’m looking for. It was just that easy. Now I have another great guy on my crew and the lowest paid position is $20/hr. starting vs $15. We are a tiny family business in a niche market and I can still keep the lights on. I’m not sure why all these big businesses by me are shutting down. It’s like they would rather make zero dollars than cut their profits by a tiny margin. Ridiculous.
