A novel idea
Maybe companies should legally be required to provide benefits for part time workers to the same extent as full time workers. That would likely solve the “I need three jobs to get enough hours” problem because then they’d only hire full time if at all possible. Of course, there’s still all the other problems, but it’s a start.
I recently quit from my great uncle
Now in fairness he gave me a job i didn't qualify for (quest house manager) but i decided to quit. He did teach me a few things but holy crap was he stingy with money. The man wouldn't even pay me minimum wage, and when i tried to discuss overtime, he straight up said “you don't work overtime” even tho the amount of hours i have been working could have easily added to overtime. Now I'm back to being unemployed, hoping to land my third job someday with still very little experience, im not planning to add the month i worked for him in my cv because i would probably be asked for a reference from him and frankly i feel like he'll make me look bad more than anything, les gooooo. I forgot to mention he said he gave me wifi, electricity and food as “luxuries” I'll agree with…
Traps (buttersafe.com)
I did a thing
TLDR: Worked my ass off and went out of my way to make sure to give my current employer 2 weeks notice. My boss knew I was leaving in advance due to a mix-up and knew I needed the two weeks pay for health reasons. He and HR lied to me, and then terminated me the second I gave my notice (to avoid a wrongful termination lawsuit). This is a long story but I learned a lot from this and have to share it. It was such a shock to me that it's my only long-form post on reddit. The “Mistake” outlines are the key points and lessons learned, so for a longer TLDR go for those. I posted this on another subreddit, but wanted to post it here too to share. Let me tell you a tale of how I lost my naivety when it comes to thinking…
So I got a call on my work number from a telemarketer trying to advertise recruiting services, but they asked if we were still hiring for the role. She then said my exact position, of which there is only one of, so I know my job is trying to replace me. The ad is posted from a separate account than all of our other job ads, I’m guessing in an attempt to hide it from me. Guess they didn’t anticipate I would answer a telemarketer call. I work from home, but honestly I’m trying to juggle doing two jobs in one; staffing/client relations as well as recruiting/hiring. Other than myself, my boss and her husband are the only other office employees since they own the business. It’s a super stressful job and they keep me in a Zoom meeting the entire day with the camera on, even if we are…
Recap: local union started handing out flyers with a link to a card for us to sign so that they can start a vote to unionize us. Upper management is coming around now. The Outbound Operations Manager (a guy I’ve never seen or heard of before) is talking to all of us about our complaints and concerns and writing it all down in a notepad. This tells me the following: Upper management feels threatened by the union and is trying to make us happy to get us on their side. They only care about us when they are threatened. Five months nearly six working here and I’ve seen or heard of this guy. And he suddenly shows up when the union does. The union is working.
I’m in my mid 30s right now btw. I remember getting asked what my future goal was back in highschool by some lady who ran after school study academy. I answered that I want a happy life with loving family. She straight up laughed at me and told my mom I have no ambition and drive to be successful. 20 years later, I probably make 5x what she makes and still can’t afford to buy a decent house where I live. Found out that having a worry free happy life is probably the most ambitious goal you can have in life. Why we strive to work ourselves to death for some fake feeling of success and achievement is something I will never understand.
