My street has lost its internet connection for almost 2 weeks. My WFH neighbor was fired due to it.

Her bosses words were: “I live in (town) and I've has no issues. You must be lying.” She is seeking legal advice from a lawyer currently against our ISP and her ex employer. It's been 2 days and I can't stop thinking about it.

The “screw em” loophole

In the US, you probably know if you're an hourly or salary nonexempt employee, you must be paid time and a half for all hours worked over 40 in a week. That week is predefined, so an employer can't change it to move where your hours fall in a week. The law does NOT require this overtime to be “authorized”. So, if you plan to quit and you wanna hose em, squeeze all the extra hours you can in. There are 168 hours in a week. Assuming you somehow manage to work all 168 hours, your employer is on the hook for your 40 regular hours and 128 hours at time and a half. They'll fire you, but they have to pay. You have to actually work though, not just phone it in and say you were working.

Too many people treat the trajectory of events as a matter of individual choice or political philosophy. They think if you just convert the broad mass of people to your point of view, things will change. This is idealist (in the philosophical sense), bourgeois, and wrong.

Capitalist society is based on universal competition. This includes a competition of worldviews. But it is precisely in this competition that capitalism exists: anti-capitalism becomes a marketable (the used word is “recouperable”) ideology the same as any other. Marxists who understand Marxism view it differently. Here is what Marx says on the matter: When socialist writers ascribe this world-historic role to the proletariat, it is not at all, as Critical Criticism pretends to believe, because they regard the proletarians as gods. Rather the contrary. Since in the fully-formed proletariat the abstraction of all humanity, even of the semblance of humanity, is practically complete; since the conditions of life of the proletariat sum up all the conditions of life of society today in their most inhuman form; since man has lost himself in the proletariat, yet at the same time has not only gained theoretical consciousness of that loss, but through…
