I joined an open-source team a year ago to develop an extremely complicated signal processing algorithm. Ended up doing everything myself, with limited guidance from one of its admins, call him Tom. Tom followed my work closely for most part, and expressed much appreciation for it. Few others from this 10-person team chipped anything beyond a few comments. Recently I coauthored a paper, per Tom's invitation, showcasing the algorithm. My role was only to review, but their failure to get “state of the art” in a machine learning task required my intervention (that I lacked time for), which pushed it several points past. Nothing hinted something's wrong up to that point, but I did feel the others didn't really treat me as an equal part of the team. Tom denied any such thing, until I pushed to be promoted to admin, when he admitted he thinks I “lack technical competence”.…

I took a job a little while ago at a big chain department store. When I took the job I was happy with the pay, part time hours and I thought I would be out early in the day. Well that isn’t what ended up happening. I’ve been working full time ever since minus a week or two. Not to mention working 6-7 days straight with a day off here and there. Plus I’ve been working late into the evenings when I was told I would be done in the early afternoon. I’ve had to take the last two days off for a family emergency and reflected a little. I decided I was going to put my two weeks in today and as I’m driving this morning I thought “fuck this, I don’t owe them anything”. I work in a CNC machine shop and the job is extremely easy. Load the material into the machine, press the button, unload the machine, rinse and repeat. There is allot of down time depending on the machine you are running, some allot more than others. For that reason we are allowed to play on our phones pretty much all day at work as long as the machine is running. Also allot of my co workers smoke pot including myself and this place doesn’t do Pre employment drug testing only tests if you hurt yourself or crash a forklift. It’s a really cool company, very small so we don’t have to wear masks and your pretty much left alone as long as your work load is completed. Very little management and over head, there is only a handful of people above me. The company pays well to starting at entry…

I used to feel so bad for taking a sick day, even when I was legitimately ill. This sub has cleared my conscience. This morning I didn’t feel like working. So I didn’t. Why the fuck should I? I have tons of PTO (including a stupid # of sick days I never even come close to reaching). Messaged my boss that I wouldn’t be working today and her response was “no problem at all.” Sat in bed watching trash TV (The Kardashians – I know.). Ordered sushi. Painted my nails. And didn’t give one single flying fuck. Might even take tomorrow off too.
